How to best maintain boxing gloves and hand wraps?

How can you best maintain your boxing gloves and hand wraps? Proper maintenance is important for your boxing equipment. After all, you want to benefit from your boxing gloves or hand wraps for as long as possible. This is possible with the right care. But what should you do or avoid if you want your boxing gloves and hand wraps to stay clean and fresh for a long time? With these tips, you can provide the best maintenance for your boxing gloves and hand wraps. And it’s much easier than you might think.

Properly maintaining boxing gloves

Maintaining the leather boxing gloves you wear during your training is important. This prevents the material from cracking and avoids unpleasant odors caused by moisture and sweat. To prevent this, you naturally also wear hand wraps. How to care for your hand wraps is explained further in this article.

Maintaining leather and synthetic leather boxing gloves

Air out: never leave your synthetic leather or leather boxing gloves in your bag after finishing your (kick)boxing training. You need to air them out if you want to eliminate odors and keep the lining of your boxing gloves dry. Sweat and moisture also damage the stitching of the gloves. This increases the chance of tears.

Drying: make sure the opening of the boxing gloves is open when you let them dry after training. You can optionally put something inside, like a rolled-up newspaper. In any case, ensure that air can flow through them.

Anti-bacterial spray: the warm and moist inside of boxing gloves is a perfect environment for bacteria to develop. So spray the inside with an anti-bacterial spray. This keeps your boxing gloves hygienically clean and smelling fresh.

Oiling: do you have leather boxing or bag gloves? Then it is also important to oil them once a month with a nourishing leather oil. This keeps your gloves supple and prevents cracks and tears in the cowhide leather. This extends their lifespan. Synthetic leather boxing gloves do not need oiling. This material does not absorb oil.

Maintenance for hand wraps or inner gloves

If you regularly attend boxing training, you also know how important it is to wear hand wraps or inner gloves. Not only to protect your hands and wrists but also to absorb sweat and moisture. This prevents the moisture from being absorbed by the lining of your boxing gloves. Hand wraps also need maintenance.

But how do you do this properly? Inner gloves or boxing hand wraps made of stretch cotton have a high absorption capacity. So you want to wash them after every training session. The best way is in cold water. You can optionally soak them. Rinse the wraps with clean, cold water. Preferably do not use chemical detergents. You can choose a biological product that does not damage the cotton wraps. Always air dry your wraps and definitely do not put them in the dryer. This prevents the wraps from shrinking and wrinkling. Wrapping your hands and wrists becomes much more difficult due to the folds that form. Additionally, the creases can cause uncomfortable pressure points or chafing on your skin.
