10 things I wish I knew when I started kickboxing
Kickboxing is one of the most complete and challenging sports you can do. But as a beginner, it can be overwhelming at first: technique, endurance, gear, rules… A lot comes at you.
That’s why I’m sharing 10 things I wish I had known beforehand — so you start your kickboxing adventure better prepared. Whether you just started or still have to take your first class: these insights will save you injuries, frustration, and wrong purchases.
1. Good wraps are not an unnecessary luxury
Your hands and wrists take quite a beating. Without wraps, you risk bruises or overuse injuries. Buy them right away with your gloves — you can find them here.
2. Sparring comes later — first technique
Many beginners want to spar immediately, but that often leads to frustration or even injuries. Focus first on your basics: guard, balance, and combination feeling.
3. You don’t have to buy an expensive outfit right away
Train in a good sports shirt and shorts. Only when you train more often can you invest in kickboxing-specific clothing like the KO Fighters gear.
4. Boxing gloves really differ from each other
The size (oz), padding, and closure make a huge difference. A 10oz feels very different from a 16oz. Ask for advice or check our gloves guide.
5. Your condition is tested in a whole new way
Even if you are fit, kickboxing is different. Interval, explosiveness, and focus make it harder than an average gym session — but also much more fun.
6. Your legs become just as important as your arms
Many beginners focus on punches, but kicks, knees, and footwork are just as important. So don’t forget to wear shin guards when you kick.
7. Everyone starts somewhere — no one looks down on you
It feels exciting to step into a gym as a beginner, but remember: everyone was once the “newbie.” Kickboxing gyms often have a strong community and respect for effort.
8. You don’t have to be muscular or super fit to start
You build strength, condition, and technique during training. Don’t be discouraged by others’ level — only compare with yourself from yesterday.
9. Injuries often arise from poor equipment
A glove that’s too big or worn-out wraps cause problems. Invest in your safety with gear that fits your level. Check our complete collection.
10. Kickboxing changes not only your body — but also your mindset
You become more confident, calmer, and learn to handle pressure. The mental benefits are just as valuable as the physical ones. You feel that after just a few weeks.
Conclusion
Everyone starts ignorant — and that’s completely okay. But with the right preparation and equipment, you get more out of your training and stay injury-free. Trust your process, train with respect, and use gear that supports you at every stage.
